It started close to home

When someone I deeply cared about had skin cancer, I watched them navigate the exhausting cycle of consultations, biopsies, and uncertainty – for nearly seven years. I saw the emotional toll of repeated biopsies, the cost of delayed answers, and how even in a country like Australia, with some of the best clinicians in the world, early detection still comes down to chance. The experience opened my eyes to how fragmented and reactive our approach to skin health truly is. 

At the time, as an academic researcher at the University of Melbourne, I started with a simple question: what if we could detect skin cancer instantly even without a biopsy? That curiosity, backed by world class technology and clinical experts, led to the creation of AI camera that could see beneath the surface — literally — and detect early changes invisible to the naked eye in real-time. But as I dove deeper, I realised it wasn’t just about building smarter technology. It was about building trust — technology that understands, empathises, and empowers both clinicians and patients.

Built through world-class research in multimodal imaging and artificial intelligence, DeepDerm brings together cutting-edge AI with deep empathy for the people it serves.
